It’s nearly ‘case closed’ for filming on the news series of Sherlock but could one cast member be about to depart Baker Street for good?
Amanda Abbington, who plays Dr John Watson’s wife and secret bad ass Mary Elizabeth Watson, tweeted this intriguing picture.

Given the presence of a golden ring, it could just be a play on words (by the way, that’s her own ring and not Mary’s, so at least the Watson don’t ‘consciously uncouple’) but those particular words ‘golden wrap’ are usually reserved for when an actor bows out of a show for the final time. And if that’s the case it sounds like season four will be Abbington and Mary’s last – and that can’t be good news for John (Martin Freeman).
So the question remains: Could Mary leave? Is this the ‘tragedy’ that co-creator, writer and actor Mark Gatiss hinted at when he spoke to the Radio Times back in 2014? After all, Mary has already outlived her literary counterpart Mary Morstan who dies some time during the period between Sherlock Holmes (Benedict Cumberbatch) apparent demise at the Reichenbach Falls and his return three years later, both of which have already taken place in Sherlock.
However, as for sticking closely to the text, Gatiss has warned fans not to expect them to be a slave to the written word:
“Just because it’s in the stories doesn’t mean it’ll happen in the series because there’s an awful lot of changes and an awful lot of places to go and things to do.
“It should be clear by now that while, of course, Doyle is our absolute god, we have gone quite a long way away as well – we’ve introduced Sherlock and Mycroft’s parents [for instance], I don’t think they’ve ever been seen in any adaptation – so there are lots of surprises to come.”
So does this mean the end of Mary and, given her background as a former assassin, are we to assume that she doesn’t go quietly into the night?
