Happy 2017 From The Doctor Who Companion!

Happy New Year from everyone at the DWC!

2016 has been a strange 12 months. Though it’s certainly quickened the blood on many fronts, it’ll go down in history as a notable year. It’s been divisive, that’s for sure, and sad too: the number of celebrities we’ve lost is shocking – from Terry Wogan to David Bowie, Alan Rickman to Richard Adams.

But 2016 has also been cause for celebration, at least for us – because it’s when the DWC debuted! It wasn’t the most obvious time; after all, only one episode of Doctor Who aired, and that just a week ago – The Return of Doctor Mysterio on Christmas Day. Fortunately, the team has had plenty to occupy their time, including updates on Series 10, Big Finish, novels, non-fiction books, action figures, other audio adventures, and a heady mix of opinion, facts, and trivia.

That means we’ve published nearly 950 articles since March. Not bad, eh?

2017 will be exciting. We’ve Peter Capaldi as the Twelfth Doctor, and Matt Lucas as Nardole in 12 episodes from the spring; they’re joined by Pearl Mackie as Bill Potts, and the Series 10 trailer has definitely hyped us up. Then there’s the 2017 Christmas special, the last regular episode to be written by Steven Moffat, showrunner since 2010’s Series 5 and writer of Doctor Who since 2005 (unless you count The Curse of Fatal Death). We’ll also see Broadchurch, the headline-grabbing ITV show created by upcoming Who showrunner, Chris Chibnall, and later today, Sherlock Series 4 starts with The Six Thatchers

What’s more, we have plenty from Big Finish, Titan Comics, BBC Books, and more.

As the Ninth Doctor might say, 2017 is going to be fantastic. And this is where it all begins.

Happy New Year to all at the DWC too Philip; we’ve enjoyed the year with you, and 950 is impressive. here’s to the next 1000!

    • Philip

Happy New Year, bar! And thanks for staying with us 🙂

HNY to all and Philip, a question–is that *definite* that Moffat is writing the 2017 Christmas special to end his run? I only ask because up until now, I wasn’t sure whether Chibnall was coming in at Christmas or starting with series 11. I’m on the edge of my seat wondering whether Capaldi is staying or leaving and either way, I think he has to let the writer of the 2017 Christmas special writer *know* his intention rather soon, I would think. Because if he *is* leaving, he’d probably leave next Christmas. …..and they’d have to pick a whole new Doctor too!

    • Philip

As far as I know, Moffat’s in charge of 13 eps, so 12 in Series 10 then the Christmas special. But I’m not 100%! Yeah, pretty sure Chibnall’s era starts in 2018…

        Cool, thanks!

2016 seemed bound and determined to kill as many on its way out as possible. One last sad casualty just before it ended: William Christopher, who played Father Mulcahy on M*A*S*H.

On a personal note, I hope this new year turns out much better. 2016 was marred by many health issues for me, and I’m hoping to surmount them this year and get back closer to a state of normal (which for me doesn’t mean perfect, but at least manageable).

To all the rest around here, I hope we all have a great year for 2017. 🙂

    • Philip

Sorry, mate, but onwards and upwards 🙂 I hope 2017 will be a great one for you.

      • TimeChaser

Thanks, Philip. 🙂 I’m already starting to feel better, and tomorrow my wife and I get to celebrate our anniversary (three years now).

        • TheLazyWomble

          Congratulations to you both 🙂

          • TimeChaser

            Thanks, Womble. 🙂

        • Philip

Great to hear, and congratulations to you and your wife! 🙂

        • Ranger

Great to hear from you again TC, we were worrying about you earlier. Glad you are feeling better and congrats to you and your wife.

Happy New Year to everyone. Whatever happens in 2017 it will be a little brighter than 2016 as there will be a full series of DW.

          • TimeChaser

Thanks, Ranger. Yeah, I would often wonder if you guys noticed my conspicuous absences on here for so long. Now that I’m better, I will endeavor to return to a more active presence. 🙂

            good. You were missed.
