The Crown: Season 1, Starring Matt Smith, Coming to DVD and Blu-Ray

Season One of The Crown, starring the Eleventh Doctor himself, Matt Smith, is to be released on DVD and Blu-ray next month.

The series – which details the reign of Queen Elizabeth II, played by Claire Foy, alongside the Duke of Edinburgh, Prince Philip (Smith) – is a Netflix original show, and so joins a very limited range of series exclusive to the streaming service that have subsequently been released in a physical format; the other Netflix DVDs and Blu-rays are all the excellent Marvel shows, including Daredevil and Jessica Jones, the latter starring the Tenth Doctor, David Tennant (all highly recommended).

Here’s the release’s synopsis:

The Crown focuses on Queen Elizabeth II as a 25-year-old newlywed faced with the daunting prospect of eading the world’s most famous monarchy while forging a relationship with legendary Prime Minister, Sir Winston Churchill. The British Empire is in decline, the political world is in disarray, and a young woman takes the throne… a new era is dawning. Peter Morgan’s masterfully researched scripts reveal the Queen’s private journey behind the public facade with daring frankness. Prepare to be welcomed into the coveted world of power and privilege and behind locked doors in Westminster and Buckingham Palace… the leaders of an empire await.

Features all 10 60-minute episodes:

The Crown: Season One is even more special, as The Platinum Edition will also be released concurrently, additionally including:

Needless to say, if you’re a fan of Smith, you really need to watch The Crown; it’s a stunning show – the most expensive made for Netflix, costing some $130 million – and the cast is perfect.

The Crown: Season One is out in the UK on 16th October.
