Radio Times Bids Farewell to Peter Capaldi's Twelfth Doctor

It’s that time of year again: advent, when we’re all anticipating Christmas, including what’s on television over the festive period. And the TV listings magazines are always released at odd times. True to form, the Radio Times previews magazine for 9th- 15th December is out today, and stars Peter Capaldi, taking pride of place on the cover.
Inside, you can find a 6-page feature on Twice Upon A Time, and Doctor Who itself. Radio Times takes a look back at its own coverage of the Twelfth Doctor era, and of course, thoughts then turn to the future. Jodie Whittaker will be the first female Doctor and it’s caused a fair bit of commotion.
David Bradley, who plays the First Doctor in the 2017 Christmas episode, acted in Broadchurch, which starred Whittaker and was written by incoming showrunner, Chris Chibnall. Bradley says:

“When I heard it was Jodie, I thought, ‘Well, that’s perfect’ – because she’s got the range and she’s funny. They just need to keep that sense of fun and not forget the comic energy.”

Steven Moffat, who’s been responsible for Doctor Who since Series 5 and has helped cast numerous Doctors in the past, reflects:

“If we’d replaced David Tennant with a woman, it wouldn’t have worked. It was too early. We could have replaced Matt Smith with a woman, given that his Doctor was more sexless and less of a lad, but then I got obsessed with seeing Peter in the TARDIS.”

Personally, that statement baffles me. The Eleventh Doctor – more sexless and less of a lad?! Mind-boggling.

The eagle-eyed among you may have noticed that Capaldi is wearing a battered jacket on the listings’ cover – a hint of the torment he’ll go through in Twice Upon A Time? Let’s hope not…
The Radio Times, dated 9th- 15th December 2017, is out now. The bumper Christmas edition, which covers 23rd December 2017 to 5th January 2018, including details on the Twelfth Doctor’s swansong, goes on sale on Saturday 9th December in the South East, and rolls out nationwide by Tuesday 12th December.
