Karen Gillan’s directorial feature film debut, The Party’s Just Beginning, will premiere at the Glasgow Film Festival in late February 2018.
The Party’s Just Beginning is Gillan’s first full feature, although she’s previously written and directed two short films, Coward and Conventional, the latter of which may resonate with science fiction and comic book fans… It’s bleak, funny, enlightening, and an overall wonderful piece.
Karen of course played Amy Pond between 2010 and 2012, then reprised her role briefly for Matt Smith’s swansong Doctor Who, The Time of the Doctor. Since then, she’s carved out a huge movie career for herself, including as Nebula in Marvel Comics’ Guardians of the Galaxy titles; her next MCU appearance will be in this year’s Avengers: Infinity War. The Party’s Just Beginning, shot in Karen’s hometown of Inverness, sees her joined by her Guardians of the Galaxy co-star, Lee Pace (who played Ronan the Accuser for Marvel), as well as Kate Dickie (Game of Thrones), Matthew Beard (The Imitation Game), and Siobhan Redmond (the Rani for Big Finish).
Here’s the synopsis for The Party’s Just Beginning:
Karen Gillan’s first feature as writer/director is fiercely honest as it tumbles between abrasive humour and tender-hearted humanity. In a bleak Inverness midwinter, Lucy (Gillan) is careering off the rails after the suicide of her best friend. She medicates her misery with joyless sex, chips and a belief in the power of positive drinking. Surrounded by bittersweet memories, she struggles to find someone to talk to or some reason to make life worthwhile at the most stressful time of the year. A poignant, plaintive tale of loss, grief and survivor’s guilt with a terrific ensemble cast.
With a duration of 90 minutes (approx.), the film debuts on Saturday 24th February, with Gillan and other cast members in attendance, followed by an encore the next day. You might recall The Party’s Just Beginning under its previous title, Tupperware Party.
David Tennant will also be at the Glasgow Film Festival, for the first European screening of You, Me, And Him, a romcom starring Faye Marsay (Last Christmas). The movie airs on Sunday 25th and 26th February.
The Glasgow Film Festival runs from 21st February to 4th March 2018. Head over to the official website to find out more!
