Rumour: Doctor Who Could Move to Another Day of the Week

Could Doctor Who be about to abandon Saturday night?
The Mirror are reporting that plans are afoot to switch the show from it’s regular Saturday slot for Sunday – in a bid to avoid scheduling conflicts with cha-cha-a-thon Strictly Come Dancing which in recent series have pushed Doctor Who to a later, less kid-friendly timeslot.
Despite other mitigating circumstances, the move will attempt to revive flagging viewing figures which have dropped from 7.3 million in 2014 to 5.5 million last year.
The next series, which will be the first for showrunner Chris Chibnall and new Doctor Jodie Whittaker and the move would be attractive to break with tradition – historically the show aired on Saturdays, and despite moving around the schedule throughout it’s life, has always returned to the slot.
The Mirror’s shadowy on-set source said:
“On Saturdays everything has to fit around Strictly.
“Moving Doctor Who to a Sunday could make perfect sense. It is a serious option.”
Which sounds less assured than the reporting would have you believe – perhaps there’s still some serious conversations to come regarding the day itself.
The source adds:
“Chris is taking Doctor Who apart to give it a revamp. The only things viewers will immediately recognise are the sonic screwdriver, the TARDIS and the theme tune.”
Will those wholesale changes extend to breaking tradition and shifting the Doctor to another time and space on BBC One?
Doctor Who will return this Autumn.
