Doctor Who Star Rumoured To Be Playing Darth Vader In Rogue One

Speculation is rife that Darth Vader will at some point pop up in Star Wars anthology tale, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story but could a Doctor Who alum be about to unite the franchises so they can rule the galaxy once and for all!

You probably haven’t heard the name Spencer Wilding and you would probably be hard pressed to point him out in a crowd but you’ve seen him. A simple trip over to IMDB reveals an impressive roster of TV shows and movies that the actor, martial artist and specialist creature performer has appeared in.

Name a beloved sci-fi and fantasy franchise and odds are he’s been in it. Seriously, he’s kind of a big deal. And now it seems he could be the biggest deal of them all.

Rogue One will follow a wayward band of Rebel fighters who come together to carry out a desperate mission:  to steal the plans for the Death Star before it can be used to enforce the Emperor’s rule. The cast includes: Felicity Jones, Diego Luna, Riz Ahmed, Ben Mendelsohn, Donnie Yen, Jiang Wen, Forest Whitaker, Mads Mikkelsen and Alan Tudyk.

So I hear you cry: ‘Who was he in Doctor Who then?’

Well, he first played the Minotaur in series six episode The God Complex, before going on to play the Wooden King in 2011 Christmas special The Doctor, the Widow and the Wardrobe. He rounded of his Who trilogy as Ice Warrior Skaldak in Series Seven’s Cold War.

However, don’t expect to hear Welding’s distinctive Welsh tones when the time comes to don Vader’s distinctive black armour/breathing apparatus/sexy sexy cape – veteran actor James Earl Jones will once again provide the voice for the returning foe.

Which seems like the perfect excuse to watch this again.

It’s not the first time that Vader has kind of appeared in Doctor Who. The original man behind the mask, the Green Cross Code Man himself, David Prowse, also played a Minotaur in the 1972 serial The Time Monster, so, if you ever have plans on being Vader, the career path is pretty clear – play a Minotaur in Doctor Who and the role is yours!

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is set for release on December 16th.
