As well as being the best television serial to bear the name Torchwood, Children of Earth heartlessly killed off Gareth David-Lloyd’s Ianto Jones. In Big Finish’s latest audio drama, Jones is reunited with the guy in whose arms he’d die: Captain Jack Harkness, as played by John Barrowman.
I’ll be honest: I found Jack and Ianto’s relationship a bit strange on TV. One minute, Jones was mourning the loss of his dear Cyberwoman; the next, almost as if to give him more relevance, he’s hooked up with his boss. But, just as Big Finish has tried to tidy up the mess of Miracle Day, the company’s new story, Broken, addresses exactly how their more-than-just-friendship evolved:
Whenever Ianto Jones has a tough day at work, he has somewhere he can hide. And, for Ianto Jones, it’s always a tough day at work.
His girlfriend is dead, his colleagues don’t trust him, and his boss… his boss is something else. With no friends in the world, and his life in danger every day, is it any wonder that at night, Ianto Jones goes to the pub?
Ianto’s local becomes somewhere where he feels safe. Safe from his demons, safe from his life, safe from Torchwood. Until one evening, Captain Jack Harkness walks into a bar…
Also starring Melanie Walters, Eiry Thomas, and Ross Ford, Broken is the first time (aside from Forgotten Lives, which featured Eve Myles with semi-regular, Kai Owen) two regulars from the Torchwood TV series have starred together in a story for Big Finish – so this sort of leads into November’s full-cast Torchwood: Outbreak.
Written by Joseph Lidster, Broken is the penultimate release of Torchwood‘s second audio series, and is available now for £9.99 as a CD or £7.99 as a download. It goes on general release from 30th September.
