Geek royalty Joss Whedon has made a name for himself crafting sharp as a whip, female driven dramas like Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Dollhouse. So it comes as no surprise that when asked ‘Would you ever write an episode of Doctor Who?’ he responded thusly:
“Check back with me when the Doctor is a she.”
Elaborating on that answer during a Nerd Machine Q&A, he went on to say:
“I’m not sure, and here’s why. I’d have to do a lot of research. Like watch 40 years of television. I’ve seen some of it…
“It would be very daunting to follow in the footsteps of Moffat and the guys…Check back with me when the Doctor is a she…or Idris Elba.”
The ’40 years of television’ quote is neither here nor there. As long as he had a basic grasp of what information the episode needed I’m sure any writer, let alone one of the finest writers in a whole host of mediums, could come up with something new and exciting.
After all, isn’t that what Moffat wants for his final season?
Whedon’s influence on Doctor Who is as important as his influence on the whole of television. Buffy the Vampire Slayer paved the way for mainstream sci-fi and fantasy shows that dealt in rich characters and interesting dynamics. Take a look at the upcoming Class – it wears it’s Sunnydale High Letterman jacket with pride.
So would you like to see Joss Whedon tackle an episode of Doctor Who? Which other television writers deserve a crack at Doctor Who? Do you have to be versed in the shows entire history to write for it?
