Things aren’t looking too good for the Great Detective. Series 4 of Sherlock has finished filming, and Benedict Cumberbatch has very swiftly broken the hearts of its fans.
In an interview with GQ, Cumberbatch spoke about the upcoming trilogy of episodes:

“It might be the end of an era. It feels like the end of an era, to be honest.”

Now, before you start weeping uncontrollably like some sort of stone statue, he adds:

“I’d love to revisit it, I’d love to keep revisiting it – I stand by that. The idea of never playing him again is really galling. But in the immediate future we all have things that we want to crack on with and we’ve made something very complete as it is, so I think we’ll just wait and see.”

In fact, both Cumberbatch and his co-star, Martin Freeman are caught up in making Marvel movies, the latter as Everett Ross, making his debut in Captain America: Civil War. Benedict, meanwhile, is playing the lead role in this month’s Doctor Strange, a part he’ll also play in a future Avengers film.
Sherlock co-creator, Steven Moffat has previously ruminated on the possibility of Series 4 being the last, but also said that he and writer, Mark Gatiss have ideas for further series.
Basically, who knows? I guess we’ll find out sometime in the future!
Sherlock is due to return to BBC1 in early 2017.
