It was months in the planning, with many late nights and early mornings and long weekends and possibly even a nice cup of tea, but the day of reckoning finally dawned on Saturday 8th October 2016 – The Day of The Daleks! Or as it was better known, The Great Bedford Foodbank Sponsored Dalek Push!
As regular readers will know, we are great fans of the Bedford Foodbank here – for the great work they do feeding those less fortunate people that aren’t capable of providing for themselves. We have written about the Bedford Who Charity Con, 2 years running now (on the Doctor Who Companion and in a previous incarnation over at Kasterborous), and now its driving force, Simon Danes, has put his organisational skills to the test to arrange this charity event for Doctor Who fans to push some evil pepperpots around the surprisingly bumpy streets of Bedford to raise funds. Yours truly, this humble author, was proud to take part – you’ll see me dressed as a steampunk version of the Fourth Doctor.
Putting the event together was not easy. There were phone calls to be called, sponsors to…umm… sponse, and of course, many forms to to be filled in. The somewhat exhausted Simon Danes had this to say about the event:
“Well, it all went very smoothly. Or bumpily. Daleks don’t like pavements. Huge thanks to everyone who donated or who took part. These days, society is so litigious that you have to do a risk assessment for things like this, as well as get public liability insurance. Readers may enjoy the final bit of the risk assessment that was sent to Bedford Borough Council, where it caused much merriment.”
Yes. Simon D really did submit this. And no, I don’t think the ladies in the office have stopped giggling yet!
Those lovely ladies of Doctor Who companionship, Sophie Aldred and Katy Manning (both of whom this humble author has now met at the Bedford Who Charity Con!) were proud patrons of this event and Katy sent a message of support:
‘As I know only too well it’s not easy to push a pesky Dalek around! Huge congratulations to all those brave enough to do so, your support for this extremely worthwhile cause has been invaluable! Hugs Katy xx’
So, on to the really good news! As of the morning of Wednesday 12th October 2016, the Great Bedford Foodbank Sponsored Dalek Push has raised a grand total of… £3,429.72!
You can, of course, support the Bedford Foodbank if you so desire – and we would be extremely grateful if you did, but no pressure. Here are some pictures to give you an idea of what happened on the day and maybe entice you to donate a few pounds. Maybe give up the price of a cup of coffee and have some water instead?
So, as you can see, we all had a great time raising funds with Cybermen, Daleks, a Weeping Angel, a Doctor, a Clara, and even a TARDIS mixing with the humans to spend a few hours walking and/or trundling (and sometimes falling apart) through Bedford and eliciting supportive honks from motorists, bewildered stares from shoppers, and, most importantly, big smiles from children of all ages! There’s even a spiffing video over on YouTube.
