Meryl Streep might’ve made the headlines for her speech about politics, but the Golden Globes 2017 was also notable for naming The Crown as the best Drama Series.
The Netflix original made our own list of Top 2016 TV shows, backed up by a TARDIS-load of glowing reviews, so it’s great to see the series awarded such an accolade. The show regales the real-life story of Queen Elizabeth II’s reign, with the first series covering her marriage to Prince Philip – the latter played by the Eleventh Doctor himself, Matt Smith.
Though Matt wasn’t there to receive the award, Peter Morgan, the series creator, and director, Stephen Daldry were in attendance, as was Claire Foy, who stars as the Queen. John Lithgow, who plays Winston Churchill in The Crown, said:

“It is astonishing. It delights all of us. We knew we were doing something fine — from Day One, we knew this was going to be extraordinary, but we didn’t dream it would so popular globally.”

The Crown faced tough competition from Game of Thrones, Westworld, Stranger Things, and This Is Us, while Foy was also named best Actress in a Drama.

Elsewhere, the biggest success of the night was The Night Manager, the BBC adaptation of John le Carre’s espionage novel. Though it lost out on Best TV Movie or Miniseries (to the excellent The People Vs. OJ Simpson: American Crime Story), Tom Hiddleston won Actor in a TV Movie or Miniseries; Hugh Laurie beat Lithgow for Supporting Actor in a Series, TV Movie, or Miniseries; and Olivia Colman (The Eleventh Hour; Broadchurch) won Actress in a TV Movie or Miniseries.
