Scripts for The Pilot and Oxygen Available Now on BBC Writersroom

As a special treat for aspiring and professional writers, the BBC Writersroom has now added the shooting scripts for the Doctor Who Series 10 episodes The Pilot by showrunner, Steven Moffat (originally titled A Star In Her Eye); and Oxygen by Jamie Mathieson, who is known for Mummy on the Orient Express, Flatline, and The Girl Who Died (co-written with Moffat).

The Pilot was a fast-paced opener for the series, introducing a new dynamic to the TARDIS as Bill Potts (Pearl Mackie) was welcomed aboard, alongside Matt Lucas’ Nardole. While Nardole was left behind on the university campus to guard the vault for the next few episodes, Oxygen saw him go on a proper adventure with Bill and the Doctor (Peter Capaldi) on the space-station Chasm Forge.

In case you’ve not heard before, the Writersroom is a fantastic resource and opportunity for would-be screenwriters to hone their craft by learning from the professionals in interviews and blogs, and exploring the extensive Script Library. There are also regular open submission dates each year for the BBC to find new talent, typically in the fields of Drama and Comedy.

Or, if you’re a Doctor Who fan, you can merely visit to see script details on episodes!
Other Doctor Who episodes in the Script Library include Smith and Jones (2007), The Magician’s Apprentice/ The Witch’s Familiar (2015), and Heaven Sent/ Hell Bent (also 2015).

You can check out this Radio Times article on the background of The Pilot’s title change, along with further details on the cut scenes by director Lawrence Gough in Doctor Who Magazine #512.

If you’re keen to explore Oxygen’s earliest development, you can also check out Mathieson’s original outline on his website, with an exclusive Writersroom blog post on spec’ scripts.

Available to download for free as PDF files, this is a Whovian’s lifetime opportunity to read and learn the format of screenwriting for television. Wish for more!
