Pearl Mackie on Bill Potts: “There’s Always More to Explore”

Pearl Mackie has been a revelation. She absolutely has. I wasn’t especially impressed with that Friend from the Future skit, but when publicity went into overdrive for Series 10, I was hopeful. And Pearl, as Bill Potts, more than delivered.

That’s why it’s such a shame she’s being swept under the rug as Chris Chibnall takes over as showrunner and Jodie Whittaker as the Doctor.

Mackie was recently asked if she’d consider returning (beyond her part in Twice Upon A Time this Christmas), and she replied:

“I think you can never explore enough of any character. Well, you need to let the audience decide that really, don’t you?

“I think one of the things about Bill is that she’s very real. She’s very human – and with any person, there’s always more to explore. It’s not like ‘Oh, okay, that’s great, that’s it, that’s my book, I’m done.’ Do you know what I mean? So yeah, I think there’s room for plenty more exploration if that happened.”

I think there’s definitely more to discover about Bill, although I’m not sure how much further she can go as a watery substance. Doesn’t it take away some danger if she can just reassemble herself from a gloopy pool? After all, Heather survived the deadliest fire in the universe in The Pilot; if Bill is similarly comprised of clever alien fuel, she must be essentially invincible too, right? I guess we’ll find out on Christmas Day…

Pearl further enthused about her time on the show:

“I don’t think it could have gone better if I planned it. It’s phenomenal. I really like Bill, and I really responded well to her when I first read her. So I’m just overwhelmingly pleased that other people have as well.”

Frankly, it has been phenomenal.

Would you like to see Bill return after Peter Capaldi’s regeneration? Or should her extended stories be better told in expanded mediums, i.e. books, audio, maybe semaphore?
