It may seem like long time ago in a galaxy far, far away since Matt Smith’s Eleventh Doctor travelled through space and time, but it looks like the former Time Lord will be touring the universe once again as he’s joining the cast of Star Wars IX.
Variety are reporting that Smith has signed on for the currently filming ninth instalment of the Skywalker saga. There are no details about what character Smith will be playing – or whether he’ll be a Resistance fighter or join the ranks of British thespians who have played villains in the Star Wars saga – but it has been described as a “Key Role”.
Smith isn’t the only new face to join the Star Wars universe – appearing alongside the main cast of Mark Hamill, the late Carrie Fisher (who will appear thanks to previously unreleased footage from The Force Awakens), returnee Billy Dee Williams, Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver, and John Boyega are Lord of the Rings star Dominic Monaghan, The Americans’ Keri Russell and fellow Doctor Who alum Richard E. Grant, who played Doctor Walter Simeon/The Great Intelligence during Matt Smith’s tenure as the Doctor.
Directed by The Force Awakens JJ Abrams Star Wars IX is due for release December 20th 2019.
