The world has a new podcast, this time from Tenth Doctor, David Tennant, in which he promises ‘Me and some cool people, talking and stuff.’
In the coming weeks, you can expect to listen as David Tennant Does a Podcast with… celebrities such as Michael Sheen, Ian McKellen, Jon Hamm, Krysten Ritter, Whoopi Goldberg, Gordon Brown, and even a certain Jodie Whittaker. But David’s first guest is his friend and former Broadchurch co-star, Olivia Colman. Olivia ̶ currently playing Queen Anne in The Favourite ̶ appears with her dog, Alfred, and discusses the downside of being famous, including her travails trying to get Wikipedia to correctly report her age.
While producer Steve Ackerman has claimed that David’s show is ‘an interview podcast series like no other’ and that his closeness to his guests results in ‘compelling’ conversation, it might be best not to expect probing interrogations of his chums. As Fiona Sturges of the Financial Times wrote of the first edition, ‘there is a drawback to this closeness too, notably in the compliments that they heap relentlessly upon one another, and in the avoidance of difficult topics… A sharper and more focused interviewing style may be needed further down the line to avoid the show turning into a celebrity love-in.’
David Tennant Does a Podcast with… is free, with two episodes already available, although listeners will need to have sold their souls upfront to iTunes in order to hear it.
