Karen Gillan, who played Amy Pond in Doctor Who regularly between 2010 and 2012, is keen to direct a Marvel film, but says it’s got to be the right project for her.
After the success of Avengers: Endgame – already a record-breaking movie – it’s understandable that so many big names want to work on upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) movies… and Karen has her foot in the door. She says:
“I keep asking [President of Marvel Studios] Kevin Feige when that’s going to be. I’m still waiting… I think it would need to be one where I had a strong feeling that I was the best person for the job. Obviously that’s not every movie that comes your way.”
Gillan has played Nebula in the Guardians of the Galaxy volumes, and added Avengers: Infinity War to her credits last year. Her character enjoys a great deal of screen-time in Endgame, more than heroes like the Hulk, Black Widow, and Captain Marvel.
After directing The Party’s Just Beginning, some fans considered that she’d take over from James Gunn after he was sacked from the Guardians franchise following some controversial tweets. Fortunately, he’s since been rehired for the final in the trilogy. Karen adds:
“His personality, the tone of those movies, I can only describe as James’ personality. It’s his sense of humour, his writing, his taste in music. These characters are extensions of him. It’s a really personal project for him. It definitely wouldn’t have been the same version of Guardians [without him].”
Guardians of the Galaxy: Volume 3 is expected in cinemas in 2021, although that’s just a rumour right now.
