Showrunner, Chris Chibnall has all but confirmed that the new series of Doctor Who will begin on New Year’s Day, with a special episode scheduled for after Series 12 finishes – presumably in December 2020. Lee Haven Jones is expected to be its director.
“You will get a special – at the end of the series, yes.”
Rumours have been bouncing around for some time that a festive episode would be forthcoming; it now seems likely that this will screen in about a year’s time. However, Chibnall has assured us that we’re due some Doctor Who presence this Christmastime. He adds:
“I wouldn’t want you sitting there on Christmas Day looking at your watch. It would be rotten for this festive season not to have an episode of Doctor Who, wouldn’t you think?”
Series 12 concluding with a special episode follows what happened with Series 11, of course: after The Battle of Ranskoor Av Kolos, the Daleks returned – well, one of them, anyway – for Resolution on New Year’s Day 2019.
Presumably, this special adds to the 10 episodes expected in the next season.
Doctor Who Series 12 airs in early 2020.
