You can now pre-order the Fifteenth Doctor’s sonic screwdriver from Character Options, a design previously only available through a limited release at this year’s San Diego Comic Con.
The sonic screwdriver is a complete departure from all previous designs, as showrunner Russell T Davies was apparently concerned about it looking too much like a gun. Now, we have a circular nodule inscribed with some Gallifreyan text, and a couple of units that spin out from the main body, seemingly to act as additional scanners or magnifiers. It’s been labelled the ‘organic pebble teddy bear’ version by the show’s concept artists.
The Character Options version includes light and sound effects, as well as a pop-out emitter and slide-out viewer. When closed, the sonic screwdriver can be used with the emitter extended or retracted. It has three basic sounds and light combinations depending on how many times you press the buttons.
You can also extend the analyser arm and open the device completely by rotating the lower section 180 degrees either way. Opening and closing the sonic activates an on/off sound and all other functions are the same, but in the open position the internal power crystal glows.
This toy keeps to the most frequently seen version of the sonic screwdriver, i.e. in blue, gold, and silver.
The Fifteenth Doctor didn’t use the sonic too often, but it’s still a great collectable for Doctor Who fans.
Due for release on 7th October 2024, you can pre-order your sonic screwdriver now.
