It’s been reported that The War Between the Land and the Sea will partly film abroad, in Mallorca.
Exact filming locations on the island are yet to be announced, but the Doctor Who spin-off is apparently due to shoot there sometime next month (October 2024).
Mallorca is one of the Balearic Islands in the Mediterranean, part of Spain, and if you’re confused about which place we’re actually talking about, “Mallorca” is its Spanish spelling, while “Majorca” is typically its English spelling. So yes, they’re one and the same.
Palma Pictures, a production company in Spain and Portugal, will be there to help the filming of The War Between the Land and the Sea.
This is a five-part spin-off written by Doctor Who showrunner, Russell T Davies, and Pete McTighe (Kerblam!), and stars Russell Tovey (Voyage of the Damned) and Gugu Mbatha-Raw (who played Martha Jones’ sister, Tish, in Doctor Who Series 3), alongside Jemma Redgrave as Kate Stewart, Alexander Devrient as Colonel Christofer Ibrahim, Ruth Madeley as UNIT’s Scientific Advisor, Shirley-Anne Bingham, and Colin McFarlane as the US Army’s General Austin Pierce (from Torchwood: Children of Earth). It’s directed by 73 Yards‘ Dylan Holmes-Williams.
So why head to Mallorca? No, they’re not just going out there for a jolly. It’s probably to add an international feel to The War Between the Land and the Sea, and so they can take advantage of the extensive beaches — of which we’re bound to see plenty of considering “sea” is literally in the title. While the Sea Devils are rumoured to feature heavily in the story, that too is yet to be confirmed.
