Though we’re promised answers about Mrs Flood in the next season of Doctor Who, actress Anita Dobson suggests there will still be lingering questions and perhaps an open-ended mystery.
“Even at the end of the next series… there’s a line that she says, and I thought, ‘That’s a little bit odd for her to say that at this point.’
“So even at that point, she still adds another twist or a turn, so you’re not quite sure. You think she’s one thing, but you don’t know. She always keeps a few things in her pocket.
“You never quite know where she’s going. It’s nice to create a bit of mystery.”
Mrs Flood was introduced as the neighbour of companion, Ruby Sunday (Millie Gibson), in The Church on Ruby Road, in which she commented on the TARDIS as if she knew it better than a complete stranger should’ve (while breaking the fourth wall), and reappeared in the following series, notably in The Legend of Ruby Sunday/ Empire of Death, the Series 14 finale, during which she proved decidedly ominous and omniscient.
She even knows what happens to the Fifteenth Doctor (Ncuti Gatwa) — at least according to another fourth wall break at the serial’s conclusion. And while dressed like Romana from The Ribos Operation!
This will no doubt annoy many, considering the mystery of Ruby’s mother wasn’t received as well as showrunner, Russell T Davies, intended.
But we’ll have to wait and see whether Mrs Flood’s enigma is all it’s cracked up to be or whether those cracks open up the floodgates. (No? Suit yourself. It’s hard to work with this material, okay?!)
