Two members of the Doctor Who cast and crew have won at this year’s BAFTA Cymru Awards.
Ncuti Gatwa has won Best Actor at the BAFTA Cymru Awards for playing the Fifteenth Doctor, while the show’s executive producer, Julie Gardner MBE, was given the Outstanding Contribution Award, two huge honours, notably for Gardner who’s made a lasting impression on the Welsh TV landscape.
Gatwa beat competition from Philip Glenister (Steeltown Murders), Sion Daniel Young (Slow Horses), and Rhodri Meilir (Pren ar y Bryn).
“Being the recipient of this prestigious Welsh award means the world to me. Dolch BAFTA. From the moment I was given the job as BBC Head of Drama Wales in 2003, my mission was to bring projects into Wales: the skills, passion, commitment, and work ethic of people in Wales is unbeatable.”
Gardner was executive producer during Russell T Davies’ first tenure as showrunner, between 2005 and 2009/10 (The End of Time straddles that new year!), and has become part of the show again as production company, Bad Wolf, has helped bring Doctor Who to TV screens. However, beyond Doctor Who, she’s had her hand in Life on Mars and Ashes to Ashes (both starring Philip Glenister), Girl in A Café, Being Human (created by The God Complex writer, Tony Whithouse), and plenty more.
In this year’s BAFTA Cymru Awards, Doctor Who was also nominated for Best Editing, Make-Up and Hair, and Sound. Davies was nominated for Best Writer, but sadly lost out.
