Doctor Who Animated Spin-Off Coming to CBeebies — But the BBC Wants Companies to Tender For It

The BBC has revealed plans for a brand new pre-school animation series of Doctor Who, which will see the Doctor’s adventures come to CBeebies for the first time ever. The particularly interesting part is that a production company hasn’t been found for the programme yet, meaning the corporation wants companies to tender for it.

Aunty Beeb is looking for a passionate production company to create and produce the series, which will run independently from the main show, that will see the Doctor travelling through time and space for the pre-school audience, solving mysteries and problems alongside their companions and other friends.

This does, of course, mean that it’s going to take quite some time before they hit screens — indeed, 26 episodes are reportedly planned for 2027-28. And Bad Wolf, which doesn’t specialise in animations, is handing production over to a place with more knowledge on the format. The production company is expected to be announced in November.

Patricia Hidalgo, Director of Children’s and Education said:

“Everyone is welcome at CBeebies, including the Doctor! This much-loved franchise entertains millions around the world, so it is only right that our younger audience get to experience the wonder and the magic of the Doctor in a brand new format. This is an extremely exciting opportunity, and we are looking forward to welcoming companies to pitch for this new project, as we continue our commitment and investment in the UK’s animation industry.”

This does also mean that Doctor Who has a future on TV. There’s no way that the BBC would have the Doctor’s sole TV adventures be on CBeebies.

It’s also interesting that a Doctor hasn’t been announced; nor companions. As this would solely be voice work, could previous Doctors lend their talents to the show?

How do you help secure a future for Doctor Who, cementing it in the minds of kids? This is a great way of doing it.
