No Man’s Land Fort, the island fortress from the Third Doctor serial, The Sea Devils, is up for sale, for offers exceeding £1.5 million.
The sea fortress, built in the 1860s, was used as quite a recognisable location in the story, with filming taking place there in October 1971.
If you’re a Doctor Who fan (and you are, because you’re here), this is quite the investment. It’s also very, very expensive… although arguably not expensive for what you get.
The place is comprised of 9197.4sq m across four levels, with 15ft granite walls and armour plating, commissioned by then-Prime Minister Lord Palmerston to repel invasion by Napoleon III’s troops; though it was never actually invaded, it was used during the First and Second World Wars.
So what would a prospective buyer get? What has that old prison been turned into?
After a £8 million refurbishment in 2015, it was turned into a four-star hotel, boasting 23 en-suite bedrooms, five bars, a sauna and spa, and a restaurant. It was sold at auction in June 2024 for £1.25 million, and while there are plans to add a harbour to the development in order to improve access for sea vessels, No Man’s Land Fort has its own helipad anyway. We presume anyone with £1.5 million to flitter away would have their own helicopter or perhaps three of them, each named, of course, after the first three Doctors. It’s only fitting.
Oh, and the fort has its own nightclub, in case any Doctor Who fans are the outgoing types. The dress code includes no jeans but mandatory anoraks. (Why do nightclubs have dress codes anyway? There’s no point trying to appear respectable — they’re places patrons come to get drunk and vomit.)
If you’re purchasing No Man’s Land Fort, you can find your new property somewhere in the Solent, i.e. between Portsmouth and the Isle of Wight.
The previous owner, Edward Ward, described it as an “impulse buy”. Hey, we’ve all been there, right?
Anyway, if you’re the impulsive sort too and have cash cluttering up your living room, No Man’s Land Fort is available for offers exceeding £1.5 million.
