Pete McTighe, co-writer of The War Between the Land and the Sea, says that working on the new Doctor Who spin-off has been his biggest career highlight to date.
Speaking to Doctor Who Magazine, McTighe says he’s been writing the series since 2023, and goes on to enthuse:
“Malcolm Hulke did such a fantastic job in creating the Silurians and the Sea Devils. It’s a great idea, a way of doing an alien invasion story without them being alien – he was a very clever man and his stories stand the test of time. Because I knew the history, I was able to bring in a few little Easter eggs for fans of the classic series. The footage we’ve recorded for this series looks fantastic – this has been the best job of my career so far.”
The War Between the Land and the Sea, which began this last Sunday (7th December 2025) with a double bill in the UK, refashions the Sea Devils as “Homo Aqua”, whose waters mankind has been poisoning. Hulke created them as the aquatic cousins of the land-based Silurians, the original occupants of planet Earth, for the Third Doctor (Jon Pertwee) era, and they returned to battle the Fifth (Peter Davison) and Thirteenth (Jodie Whittaker) Doctors since.
McTighe, meanwhile, has been working on both the Doctor Who: The Collection Blu-ray sets and TV Doctor Who, with episodes including Kerblam! and, most recently, Lucky Day.
Considering he’s a long-term Who fan, it says a lot that he’s enjoyed writing The War Between the Land and the Sea so much.
The War Between the Land and the Sea continues this weekend in the UK, and streams around the world in early 2026.
