Arthur Darvill, who played Eleventh Doctor companion Rory Williams (sometimes Pond), has been cast in the upcoming four-film biopic series about The Beatles.
Darvill will play press officer, Derek Taylor, who was originally a journalist for The Daily Express, told to report negatively on the “teen fad” band; instead, he loved their sound and became close friends with them, working with the foursome throughout the 1960s and staying close to them after the Beatles split up. He was one of numerous people assigned the moniker “the fifth Beatle”.
Described as a “cinematic event”, the films will be directed by Sam Mendes, with each one being from each band member’s distinct point of view, intersecting to tell the full story of John Lennon (Harris Dickinson), Paul McCartney (Paul Mescal), George Harrison (Joseph Quinn), and Ringo Starr (Barry Keoghan).
The movies star a number of other familiar faces for Doctor Who fans: David Morrissey (the next Doctor in, uh, The Next Doctor) will play Paul McCartney’s father Jim McCartney; James Norton (Cold War, though you’ll likely know him better for a load of other things like Happy Valley and Grantchester) will be iconic manager Brian Epstein; Harry Lloyd (“Son of Mine” in Human Nature/ The Family of Blood) will play long-time music producer George Martin; and Daniel Hoffmann-Gill (Bors in minisode/prequel, The Doctor’s Meditation, and actual episode, The Magician’s Apprentice) as roadie Mal Evans.
These films mark the first time Apple Corps Ltd. and The Beatles have granted full life story and music rights for a scripted film. They’ll surely be better than The Devil’s Chord.
They’re expected to hit cinemas in April 2028.
