New images of Doctor Who Series 14 have been released, showing Ncuti Gatwa as the Fifteenth Doctor and Millie Gibson as Ruby Sunday in period costume. But it looks like someone or something might have been edited out.
Fans have speculated that the images have been Photoshopped to remove an element, and it wouldn’t be the first time something like that has happened — notably, Sacha Dhawan, aka the Master, was edited out of a publicity photo for Spyfall.
So what might have been removed? Well, when new showrunner, Russell T Davies, shared the photos on Instagram, he did so with two heart emojis and a potato emoji. Which might seem a tad odd. Except there is a Doctor Who monster that’s previously been compared to a potato: the Sontarans.
The war-loving clone race first appeared in The Time Warrior (or at least one member of the species did) and have returned numerous times, including The Sontaran Experiment, The Two Doctors, and The Sontaran Stratagem/ The Poison Sky. They most recently appeared in Flux: War of the Sontarans and The Vanquishers.
The BBC naturally hasn’t confirmed either way, but noted:
“Dress to impress and beware the duchess… Jonathan Groff has landed and has begun filming on the new series of Doctor Who and here is the first look of him in character in his mysterious key role alongside Ncuti Gatwa and Millie Gibson.”
Filming is likely taking place at Tredegar House, Newport, which is closed to the public from 9th to 13th May. The house was previously seen in Tooth and Claw, The Girl in the Fireplace, and Human Nature/ The Family of Blood, so it’s a fair assumption.
We’ll see Gatwa, Gibson, and Groff — and heck, maybe some Sontarans — next year when Series 14 airs on BBC1 and Disney+.
