The teaser trailers for the Doctor Who: The Collection Blu-ray sets are to be “rested” soon… which probably means an end for the additional scenes which revisit classic companions and Doctors.
These short scenes have been used to catch up with characters like Mel Bush (Bonnie Langford), Nyssa (Sarah Sutton), and Jo Jones (Katy Manning), decades after they left the TARDIS. They’ve been released with the announcement of each Blu-ray season, but writer, Pete McTighe explained:
“We’ve kind of got half of one [teaser] in the can that we did 18 months ago, and there’s more coming up. We are reaching the point where we’re going to have to have a breather from those trailers for a while, because they’re a lot of work.
“We kind of get to the point where it’s… where do we go from that? So we’re going to have to have a bit of a rest soon.”
The most recent, promoting The Collection: Season 15, saw Leela (Louise Jameson) during the Time War, but McTighe says the budget was incredibly tight and they were only given a few hours to film it.
He told the audience at the recent BFI event that these trailers will likely be replaced, at least for a time, by clip compilations.
And let’s face it, those will be cheaper, so once these special scenes are “rested”, they’re more likely to be “put to rest” entirely.
That’s a massive shame as they’re a joy to witness and allow us to see more of these much-loved characters and actors. But nothing gold can stay, so maybe we should just enjoy them while they last…
