Spoilers on the Doctor Who Companion: How We’re Handling the Midnight Release Schedule

Doctor Who Series 14 is going to be available on streaming from midnight GMT every week from 11th May 2023, coinciding with Disney+ release schedule in America and Canada. So how are we going to cut down on spoilers?

There’s not been much deliberation, in truth. There seems an obvious way to be fair: we wait to add polls until after each episode has finished airing on BBC1 each Saturday evening.

So the first episode of Series 14, Space Babies, screens at 6:20pm on BBC1 on 11th May, and The Devil’s Chord at 7:05pm that night, just before Eurovision. We won’t put the polls up until after each episode. The one for Space Babies will go online at about 7:05pm, so even though UK viewers will likely wait until after they’ve seen The Devil’s Chord to share their thoughts, anyone who’s had the chance to see it beforehand can turn to the DWC.

How about follow-up news articles and comments?

This will only really affect next weekend’s airings as it’s the only time — that we know of — that we get a double-bill. We know some people will hold off watching The Devil’s Chord for a few days, so while we’ll try to keep things as spoiler-free as possible, there are some things we just can’t help but write about. For instance, if the Master showed up in The Devil’s Chord, we’d have to comment on that. Plus, we don’t know when individual readers are going to watch each episode, so to some degree, we have to leave it in your hands to decide when the right time is to check in on the DWC.

Basically, we’re going to do our best to find the right balance. We think that’s fully achievable, and that this community can still be here for everyone to share their thoughts and indulge in.

Reviews will be published as and when in the week following each transmission. These won’t be spoiler-free, however, so be careful only to read them after seeing the stories yourself.

We don’t have any advance knowledge of what’s coming up in Doctor Who Series 14, so we’re as much in the dark as anyone is — we’ll just ride this TARDIS together and see where in time and space we end up.
