Here’s the First Official Trailer for Joy to the World(s), the Doctor Who Christmas Special

The BBC has released the synopsis and first trailer for Joy to the World, this year’s Doctor Who Christmas special episode.

Uh, and we still don’t entirely know whether it should be Joy to the Worlds, plural, or not, but we’re sticking with singular right now.

Either way, here’s the trailer, featuring Ncuti Gatwa as the Fifteenth Doctor, Nicola Coughlan as Joy, and Ncuti Gatwa as the Fifteenth Doctor. (Yes, there’s a reason we’ve listed him twice; we’ve no lost our minds. Look, just watch and enjoy, yeah?)

Pleasingly, it’s mostly new footage, though we’ve seen a few sections here and there, from previous previews for the San Diego Comic Con and Children in Need. And yes, the Doctor’s crying again — uh-oh.

Here’s the synopsis:

Joy checks into a London hotel in 2024, only to discover that her quiet stay is anything but ordinary. When Joy opens a secret doorway to the Time Hotel, she discovers danger, dinosaurs and the Doctor. But a deadly plan is unfolding across the Earth, just in time for Christmas.

Where has the Doctor been? What is going on in Joy’s hotel room? An old enemy of the Doctor’s is lurking in the wings and all of human history hangs in the balance. Can the Doctor save Christmas, everywhere, all at once?

Written by Steven Moffat, Joy to the World will be broadcast on BBC1 on Christmas Day (25th December 2024, in case you’ve forgotten how time works) at 5:10pm, and will be available to stream on Disney+ outside the UK sometime the same day.
