EXCLUSIVE: Celebrate 9 Years of the Doctor Who Companion With This FREE Book Extract

This Wednesday (26th March 2025), The Doctor Who Companion turns 9, and to celebrate, we’ve teamed up with Candy Jar Books to give you an exclusive extract of Companions: More Than Sixty Years of Doctor Who Assistants.

The book details everything you might wish to know about the Doctor’s friends, from Susan to Ruby Sunday, and this includes chapters for each incarnation of the Time Lord discussing adventures for companions across multimedia platforms, i.e. books, comics, and audio.

Appropriately enough, this extract from Companions is the entire “Expanded Universe” section of the Ninth Doctor (Christopher Eccleston). This means you can find out what Rose Tyler, Captain Jack Harkness, and Adam Mitchell get up to in other mediums, plus meet Expanded Universe-exclusive characters like Nova, Tara Mishra, and Callen Lennox (and his dog, Doyle).

The extract further includes the book’s opening essay, “What Makes a Companion?”

Alternatively, you can access it by copying this URL into your address bar: https://thedoctorwhocompanion.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/03/Exclusive-DWC-Ninth-Doctor-Extract-Companions.pdf

The full book features chapters on every companion, beginning with their adventures on TV. For the Eighth Doctor (Paul McGann), for instance, the TV section looks at Grace Holloway, then the Expanded Universe section covers the likes of Charley Pollard, Josephine ‘Josie’ Day, Liv Chenka, Stacy Townsend and Ssard from the Radio Times, Lucie Miller, and Izzy Sinclair.

Here’s the blurb for Companions:

Doctor Who was never really about the Doctor. This is the story of the Time Lord’s companions – friends through all time and space.

Discover the journeys of every one of the Doctor’s assistants, from Susan, Ian Chesterton, and Barbara Wright, to Fifteenth Doctor companion, Ruby Sunday; including their adventures off-screen, in novels, comics, and audio.

Companions: More Than Sixty Years of Doctor Who Assistants is an in-depth account of each companion, examining their arcs, significance in the TV series, and how they traversed different times, places, and mediums. Relive their travels on television. Learn what companions did after they left the TARDIS. And meet the Doctor’s wider network of friends, from Evelyn Smythe to Liv Chenka, Professor Bernice Summerfield to his grandchildren, John and Gillian.

See the universe anew through their eyes.
