Excuse the self-promotion, but my book, Companions: More than Sixty Years of Doctor Who Assistants, is out today as a special hardback edition!
Previously, the book has solely been available as a paperback through the Candy Jar Books website, but you can now buy it from other retailers like Amazon, WHSmith, and Waterstones; AUK is also releasing it as a hardcover. The latter is out right now, but the paperback will be out from 11th July.
Obviously, you can still buy a paperback copy directly from Candy Jar straight away (and if you do, you don’t give retailers a big percentage of the profits, so any little helps; on the other hand, if you have Prime, then postage would be included if you order via Amazon), but this gives you the chance to get a sturdier hardback from other stores too, delivered across the world.
Though the hardback is listed as 516 pages while the paperback is 700, the content is all still the same; AUK has simply changed page dimensions.
And if you’d like a sneak peek inside, you can download an exclusive extract of Companions for free by simply clicking here.
Alternatively, you can access it by copying this URL into your address bar: https://thedoctorwhocompanion.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/03/Exclusive-DWC-Ninth-Doctor-Extract-Companions.pdf

Here’s the blurb for the hardcover:
This is the collector’s hardback edition of Companions: More than Sixty Years of Doctor Who Assistants.
Doctor Who was never really about the Doctor. This is the story of the Time Lord’s companions – friends through all time and space.
Discover the journeys of every one of the Doctor’s assistants, from Susan, Ian Chesterton and Barbara Wright, to Fifteenth Doctor companion Ruby Sunday, including their adventures off-screen, in novels, comics and audio.
Companions: More Than Sixty Years of Doctor Who Assistants is an in-depth account of each companion, examining their arcs, significance in the TV series and how they traversed different times, places and mediums.
Relive their travels on television. Learn what companions did after they left the TARDIS. And meet the Doctor’s wider network of friends, from Evelyn Smythe to Liv Chenka, Professor Bernice Summerfield and even his grandchildren, John and Gillian.
See the universe anew through their eyes.
This of this book as a companion to the Doctor Who Companion!
I’m very proud of this book, and particularly happy with its reception. In our review (which I made sure is impartial), Jonathan Appleton said:
“It’s a book most will want to dip into rather than read cover-to-cover, and is sure to be an essential volume for any Doctor Who fiction or non-fiction writer, or anyone who just wants to satisfy their curiosity about ‘whatever happened to…?’ without resorting to Google.”
And Sci Fi Bulletin’s Paul Simpson said:
“A fascinating trawl through 61 years of Doctor Who history. 10/10”
Over the moon with those!
You can order Companions: More than Sixty Years of Doctor Who Assistants now from Amazon, Candy Jar (as a paperback), and more!
