Thirteenth Doctor actress, Jodie Whittaker, has revealed one of her regrets about playing the lead role in Doctor Who… but it’s probably not what you think it might be.
This regret actually related to her starring in The Thirteenth Doctor Adventures range for audio company, Big Finish. Jodie explains:
“I speak really quickly and I think, on film, because of the edit, you can get away with maybe tripping over something. They’ve got it on another angle. But obviously, when your voice is the entire thing, I realised how many times I mispronounce words; I trip over sounds.
“I basically pitched the Doctor too quick but I did it in my very first episode and I’ve regretted it ever since!”
She does speak fast, but lots of Doctors do, especially when reeling off technobabble, so I think that works for the Thirteenth Doctor too. I can see how that might be a problem on audio, but fair play to her for now wanting to deviate from what she’s established on TV.
I naïvely thought her regret might be not watching Doctor Who beforehand!
Nonetheless, The Thirteenth Doctor Adventures began earlier this month with Vampire Weekend, which rather impressed us at the DWC. In our review, Ida said:
“On television, this era struggled with stories that simply weren’t entertaining or that were built around narratives there was no reward in investing in. Stories that were forgettable, built to nothing, and generally lacked potential… Big Finish has already started this series with levels of energy, entertainment, lore, and Doctor-and-companion interactions that many felt missing on screen, and therefore makes episode one a worthwhile purchase.”
It’ll be nice if the Thirteenth Doctor era gets re-evaluated now Jodie gets a second run at it on audio. We always like to see Doctor Who thriving across multiple mediums, so fingers crossed.
The Thirteenth Doctor Adventures: Vampire Weekend is available now from Big Finish.
