Six Decades of Adventure in Time and Space (by the DWC’s Frank Danes!) Now Available on Kindle

Six Decades of Adventure in Time and Space: A Social, Cultural, and Screen History of Doctor Who – by the DWC’s own Frank Danes – has been republished on Kindle.

Fist published in 2018, Frank’s book is a witty and engaging history of the show from its inception to Peter Capaldi’s final story, Twice Upon A Time. It covers behind-the-scenes revelations (including some exclusives), the stories themselves, the show’s relationship with changes in the zeitgeist, and the experience of watching it as a child in the Sixties and Seventies.

If you enjoyed the recent Exterminate! Regenerate! by John Higgs, you’ll enjoy Frank’s book.

As our own Rick Lundeen put it in his review of Six Decades of Adventure back in 2018:

I thought I knew just about everything of note about Doctor Who at this point but no, no, no. I did indeed learn more, which, frankly, was surprising after everything I’d read over the last forty years about the series.

Most importantly, Mr Danes gives us a solid, comfortable, amusing, and always informative read. Danes gives what seems to be a fair and balanced account of strategic errors the BBC has made as well as bone-headed stupid moves associated with the programme, especially certain individuals over the decades. I suppose it helped that, by and large, I agreed with the author’s assessments of the seasons and the stories themselves. For me at least, this could very well be the last “history of…” book I’d ever really need when it comes to Doctor Who. And thus, I am content.

And as The Southland Times of New Zealand put it:

If there was such a thing as a time traveller’s check list, Frank Danes would tick every box … He has been watching Doctor Who since the beginning and he knows what is good, what is bad and what is ugly and he’s not afraid to talk about those things. Danes’s book is…for anyone who wants to understand [Doctor Who’s] history, whether they have been with the show since Hartnell or joined it at any [later] point.

You’ll also be pleased to see that Frank’s letter was published in Private Eye recently (though the magazine got the date of The War Games, from 1969, wrong, which I’m sure bugged him no end)…

Six Decades of Adventure in Time and Space: A Social, Cultural, and Screen History of Doctor Who is available worldwide on Amazon Kindle; it costs £7.28 in the UK and $9.99 in the US.
