Season 3, episode 6 of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds recently featured a fun little Doctor Who Easter egg!
In the episode, The Sehlat Who Ate its Tail, the Enterprise is swallowed up by the Scavenger ship. It’s hard to spot, but one zoomed-in shot of the Enterprise’s bridge features the TARDIS behind one of the Enterprise’s nacelles, on the right of the screen.
It seems that at least one of the CGI crew on Strange New Worlds is a Doctor Who fan. You can see a screenshot over at the Radio Times.
This isn’t the first time that an incarnation of Star Trek has referenced Doctor Who. An episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation included a shot of a computer screen which listed some familiar crew members: William Hartnell, Patrick Troughton, Jon Pertwee, Tom Baker, Peter Davison…
And the referencing has gone the other way, too. Ncuti Gatwa’s Doctor observed that he’d “like to visit them [meaning, the Enterprise crew] some day”, in the incomparable episode, Space Babies. In the same episode, the space babies were dressed in the colours of the original Star Trek uniforms. And Graham Williams once said in an interview in the 1970s that Doctor Who was quite different from Star Trek in that Mr Spock and Captain Kirk would stand around and discuss the ethics and morality of the dilemma posed by that week’s particular episode. This, said Williams, was something that the Doctor and (say) Romana would never do: Williams opined that the viewers would have to extrapolate any moral message themselves, while the BBC got on with telling an adventure story.
Times change …
