Here’s Doctor Who’s Alex Kingston Dancing a Viennese Waltz to… Cry Me A River

Alex Kingston, who played River Song opposite the Tenth, Eleventh, and Twelfth Doctors (respectively played by David Tennant, Matt Smith, and Peter Capaldi), showed off her first dance in Strictly Come Dancing this last weekend with a wonderful Viennese Waltz.

Dancing the ballroom routine with her partner, Johannes Radebe (The Devil’s Chord), the actress performed to Cry Me A River… and no, we don’t think the song name is a coincidence. Kingston, of course, played the Doctor’s wife, River Song, who also happened to be the daughter of his companions, Amy Pond and Rory Williams.

The Viennese Waltz is known for its excessive spinning, meaning Alex had to have motion sickness tablets for training and the final performance!

Here’s the dance. Enjoy!

She did a fantastic job here, though it has to be said, the judges scored rather harshly. Then again, she was on very early on in the show, so they couldn’t score too highly anyway, seeing as they didn’t know what other dances were in store, hence having to establish something of a base level. With a score of 21 (4+6+5+6), she still came 9th out of 15, between Stefan Dennis (Neighbours) and Dianne Buswell (22) and Harry Aikines-Aryeetey (Gladiators) and Karen Hauer (19). Rather pleasingly, former footballer Karen Carney, with partner Carlos Gu, topped the leader board with 31 points out of 40, higher than two celebrities who have had quite extensive dance training already. Always nice to see complete newbies do so well.

Strictly Come Dancing continues this weekend, including the first elimination on Sunday night’s Results Show.
