A newly re-edited version of the classic Doctor Who serial, The Sea Devils, will be available on BBC iPlayer and broadcast on BBC Four on Sunday 7th December 2025.
The cut-down story, featuring Jon Pertwee as the Third Doctor alongside Katy Manning as companion Jo Grant, and Roger Delgado as the Master, will be available and screen before the spin-off, The War Between the Land and the Sea, a show which features redesigned Sea Devils, now called Homo Aqua for… reasons.
Written by Malcolm Hulke and directed by Michael E. Briant, this new 90-minute special condenses the original six-part adventure into a feature-length experience, with updated sound design by Mark Ayres, and an enhanced score featured in The War Between the Land and the Sea created by Lorne Balfe, which has been woven together with Malcolm Clarke’s iconic 1972 music.
This follows similarly edited versions of The Daleks and The War Games, except those were colourised; The Sea Devils was in colour anyway. Essentially, they’re turning a six-parter into a four-parter.
Russell T Davies, showrunner and executive producer, says:
“52 years after they first rose from the depths, it’s Sea Devil night across the BBC! A great idea never dies, and viewers young and old can now heed the warning: watch the seas!”
The special version of The Sea Devils will stream on iPlayer from 6am and air on BBC Four at 7pm on Sunday 7th December, and will be followed by a double bill of The War Between the Land and the Sea at 8:30pm on iPlayer and BBC One. We presume it’ll be released on DVD and Blu-ray at some point in the near future too.
