Russell T Davies, showrunner on Doctor Who, says that the BBC executives were “loving” his idea for the next episode, due to screen at Christmas in 2026.
He said that he’d shared the plot with the BBC, and it’s left them “with jaws agape, loving it.”
He went on:
“I know what happens, but I [had] better write it down soon, in case I get run over by a bus.”
There’s a lot riding on the episode, considering it’s the only one confirmed for the future (though future series have been promised at some point), is the first for a few years without support from Disney after the House of Mouse dropped the programme following the Fifteenth Doctor (Ncuti Gatwa) era, and it will probably need to wrap up or at least address numerous plot points from The Reality War and the previous season — most pressingly, the Doctor apparently regenerating into an incarnation played by Billie Piper.
Understandably, rumours have started to circulate, including of the episode featuring “every Doctor”, though how they would manage that is a massive question. Some would likely be CGI (perhaps fine in limited capacity, as per the end of The Day of the Doctor), but even aside from that, they’d have to approach every living Doctor, including a few who haven’t actually returned to the show since leaving, i.e. Christopher Eccleston, Matt Smith, and Peter Capaldi. I could see Matt doing it, but the other two? Very doubtful. Especially Eccleston.
So we don’t know what’s going to happen, but we’ve got about a year to wait in order to find out…
