Ingrid Oliver: "Jodie Whittaker's Doctor Who Feels Very Relevant Today"

Once you’ve been in Doctor Who, it’s a near certainty that you’ll forever be asked what you think of the latest Doctor and series. While not all alumni keep up with the show, Ingrid Oliver was a fan before appearing in Doctor Who, and has been watching Series 11, the first with Jodie Whittaker’s Thirteenth Doctor.

So what does she think of it? Oliver, who played Osgood in stories like The Day of the Doctor and The Zygon Invasion/ The Zygon Inversion, says:

“I have of course seen Jodie’s Doctor Who episodes. I like the fact that they’re appealing to a family audience again and trying to broaden its appeal and the nature of the stories that they’re telling feel very relevant to today. I think it’s absolutely the direction Doctor Who should be going in.”

Obviously, she doesn’t go into specifics about what she likes, but saying “they’re appealing to a family audience again” is quite a controversial thing to say, as it insinuates that previous series were not. And that seems especially unfair to the wonderful Series 10!

Oliver’s appearing in the upcoming romance-comedy film, Last Christmas (we presume writer, Emma Thompson loved the 2014 Doctor Who Christmas special), and Ingrid enthuses:

“I loved every minute of it. We got to film in Covent Garden at Christmas time and it was absolutely magical with all the twinkling lights. Emma Thompson has long been a hero of mine so working with her was a dream come true. I had to pinch myself.”

Oliver’s latest film is The Hustle in cinemas now.

Would you like to see Osgood return to TV Doctor Who, or are you happy with her continuing her adventures in audio only for Big Finish?
