DC has revealed that Twelfth Doctor actor, Peter Capaldi, will play the Thinker in the ucpoming movie, Suicide Squad 2, directed by James Gunn (Guardians of the Galaxy).
The original Thinker was created in 1943 as a Flash villain by created by Gardner Fox and E.E. Hibbard. Clifford DeVoe – a telekinetic strategist with technologically-acquired mind control powers – was an original member of the Injustice Society before segueing into the Suicide Squad. Other Thinkers include Cliff Carmichael, and then Des Connor. Capaldi will play DeVoe, hence his shaved head, with probes angling out.
We already knew that Gunn is a Doctor Who fan – hence his casting of Karen Gillan as Nebula in the Marvel Cinematic Universe – so it’s no great shock that Capaldi is a part of the DC film. Gunn’s temporary axing by Disney after controversial historic tweets meant DC snapped him up to resurrect the failing Suicide Squad line; he was then quickly hired again by Marvel for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, meaning fans get to enjoy the best of both worlds!
Capaldi reflected that the set was a “warm, wonderful, supportive place to be”. The news, from the online DCFanDome, made Peter trend on Twitter – always a lovely thing to see!
Other members of the new Suicide Squad include Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, Idris Elba as Bloodsport, Michael Rooker as Savant, and David Dastmalchian as Polka-Dot Man.
Though we don’t know how big a part Capaldi plays in the film, as he’s a major Flash villain, can we at least hope the Thinker returns in another DC instalment…
The Suicide Squad is due for release on 6th August 2021.
