The next Doctor, Ncuti Gatwa, is expected to start filming Doctor Who in November 2022, meaning he may even be in the 60th anniversary special.
We’ve already seen David Tennant and Catherine Tate on location, returning to the series as the Doctor and Donna Noble respectively, but we don’t actually know when we’ll first glimpse Gatwa’s incarnation of the Time Lord. Either way, it looks like we’ll get to see Ncuti in action before this year is out, as he’ll presumably do outside shoots. That could mean we’ll learn what he’s wearing, whether he’ll interact with Tennant (no one seems to know whether his filming is complete), and perhaps see his companion…
After some comments from guest star, Neil Patrick Harris, some, including the DWC, believed that Ncuti has already started filming. Harris actually said he had “interact[ed] with him a bit and he’s glorious”, so has he shot a cameo? Or is this a mixed message? Or subterfuge?
Is everything a lie?!
What we do know is that Gatwa is busy right now anyway, filming the fourth series of Sex Education in which he plays Eric. This would hint that the rumoured November start-date is correct. And we’ve heard it from a few outlets so far too. He’s recently been working on the Margot Robbie-led film, Barbie, in which he plays one of the numerous Kens.
Whatever happens, the wheels are in motion, old/new showrunner Russell T Davies is gearing up for production, and we should see Ncuti in action soon.
