Here’s Our First Look at the Fourteenth Doctor’s Brand New Sonic Screwdriver

The BBC has unveiled the brand new sonic screwdriver!

The device will be used by David Tennant’s Fourteenth Doctor in the 60th anniversary specials, The Star Beast, Wild Blue Yonder, and The Giggle, later this year. The sonic screwdriver was revealed yesterday (19th July 2023) via a video on Twitter.

We don’t know yet whether this will also be used by the Fifteenth Doctor (Ncuti Gatwa), but it’s been dubbed “the Fourteenth Doctor’s”, so it’s possible another new sonic will be revealed for use throughout Series 14. Then again, numerous Doctors have used the same sonics, including David Tennant’s Tenth Doctor inheriting the Ninth’s (Christopher Eccleston).

So what do we all think? Personally, I like it. It feels very similar to the Eleventh Doctor’s (Matt Smith) sonic screwdriver, especially the handle.

Nonetheless, there are a lot of people who are a bit fed up of the sonic, particularly when it’s used as a get-out-of-jail-free card that solves too many problems, or is waved about for some bizarre reason; The Power of Three, for instance, is certainly guilty of this; so too a lot of the Thirteenth Doctor (Jodie Whittaker) era. Still, it’s pretty iconic, so it feels right that it’s going to be in the 60th anniversary celebrations.
