Carole Ann Ford has reflected on what it would be like to return to Doctor Who as Susan, the Doctor’s granddaughter, calling the prospect “very emotional.”
Ford played Susan opposite William Hartnell’s First Doctor and there’s always talk of her coming back. This time, however, it would be as the last surviving member of the original four TARDIS team after William Russell, aka Ian Chesterton, passed away. She says:
“I don’t know if I could survive the excitement actually; it would be intense beyond all intensity. It’s not just returning: it would bring back all the memories of William Russell and Jackie [Hill, who played Barbara Wright] and Bill [Hartnell] and various other people who aren’t with us anymore.
“I might be a little bit overcome and start blubbing. I keep being reminded I’m the last one standing and it’s not something I’m happy to hear.”
Indeed, while we might get carried away with the excitement of seeing Susan again, we must remember that the people who have passed away were her friends. It’s easy to see them as characters or part of the Doctor Who legacy, but more importantly, they’re individuals with family, friends, connections beyond a TV show.
Saying that, seeing Susan again might feel like a nice tribute to them. We were overjoyed to see Ian in The Power of the Doctor at least.
And Carole has confirmed that she’s met with current showrunner, Russell T Davies:
“I’ve met Russell a few times and I absolutely adore him. He is the man that would be the boss man to say yes or no – so hopefully it’s going to be yes.”
From her comments, it does feel like we could see Susan once more.
She’s been talked about or alluded to many times over the years, so we’ll see.
