Doctor Who showrunner, Russell T Davies, has said he still doesn’t know whether there will be a third season of the show with Ncuti Gatwa’s Fifteenth Doctor, and further imply that Disney won’t be involved in anything after Series 15.
He described the co-production with Disney as:
“[A] lovely experiment. We’ve had a great time. Every single drama you ever watch on television has had American money or co-production money in it for about 25 years. So, this is actually nothing new.”
Notice he’s speaking in the past tense, which could mean the deal is over. Or it could merely mean that, though the future is still uncertain, he’s enjoyed working with them so far. Nonetheless, if it’s an ongoing partnership, you don’t expect him to talk as if it’s come and gone.
He further explained:
“We don’t know if there’s a third series yet. [Series 15] will go out in the summer [2025] and then they’ll decide it. The BBC will decide, as well, its future. But I’m happy to stay with it. I love it. It’s more fun than anything else.”
This is far removed from Davies’ initial enthusiasm and promises of regular Doctor Who, plus spin-offs, and no breaks.
At the very least, we’re hearing there will be a break between Series 15 and, if it happens, Series 16. We do think Series 16 will happen, as the BBC does seem happy with the franchise, but things feel like they’re once again shifting behind the scenes. In fact, there are rumours that something major is going on, and that Doctor Who‘s future is uncertain right now.
We’ll have to keep our fingers crossed that Disney still supports Doctor Who following Series 15, which airs next year.
