Richard Latto, organiser of Doctor Who Day this last Saturday (21st June), has revealed what could be the last ever recorded interview with Patrick Troughton, who played regularly the Second Doctor between 1966 and 1969.
In the interview, from 1987, Troughton said:
“There was a sort of a bit of a stir when Colin [Baker, who played the Sixth Doctor] left and they wondered for a long time who they were going to have [as the next Doctor…] and Jon Pertwee and my name were bandied around a bit. I don’t think they really thought seriously about it.”
The full interview was broadcast at Doctor Who Day at The Concorde Club in Eastleigh, Hampshire, on Saturday 21st June 2025. In a clip released just prior to the event, Patrick also says the new guy, meaning Sylvester McCoy, would be “marvellous” and that Doctor Who should never end. Right on both accounts, Patrick!
Organiser, Latto explained:
“This is a very significant recording in the history of Doctor Who because Patrick Troughton didn’t do many interviews and this was potentially the last interview he ever did. It was recorded only three days before he very suddenly and sadly passed at a convention in the United States.
“It was recorded while he was still here, in the UK, on his actual birthday. It was recorded by a local radio station in the north of the country, and it hasn’t been heard outside of that transmission area since it was transmitted in 1987, and we have found not only that full interview but the rushes from that interview as well.”
It sounds fascinating and I hope we’ll all get the chance to listen to the full interview soon.
Meanwhile, a further Doctor Who Day is planned later in the year. We’ll endeavour to keep you updated!
