Out Now: Big Finish’s Doctor Who, Out of Time – The Complete Series

Released on 26th August 2025, exactly five years after the first story, the acclaimed Out of Time trilogy has been compiled all together in a single boxset – but as a digital download only. These multi-Doctor audios feature the Tenth Doctor (David Tennant) teaming up with the Fourth (Tom Baker), Fifth (Peter Davison), and Sixth (Colin Baker) incarnations against three familiar foes: the Daleks, the Cybermen, and the Weeping Angels. A perfect starting point for anyone who wishes to try out some multi-Doctor stories on audio!

The Tenth Doctor has an appointment with fate that he doesn’t want to keep. On one last tour around the universe he runs into a few old faces… The only trouble is, they’re all his own!

As the Doctor visits an extradimensional cathedral, the catacombs of Paris and a world enveloped by light, it’s not just past selves that he finds. Old enemies are waiting too…

In Out of Time 1 (released in 2020), by Matt Fitton, the Tenth and Fourth Doctors battle the Daleks inside the Cathedral of Contemplation. In Out of Time 2: The Gates of Hell (released in 2021), by David Llewellyn, the Tenth and Fifth Doctors battle the Cybermen in Paris. And in Out of Time 3: Wink (released in 2022), by Lisa McMullin, the Tenth and Sixth Doctors battle the Weeping Angels on the planet Lucidus Silvara. They were each recorded remotely in 2020, during the early months of the first COVID lockdown.

Producer David Richardson explains:

Out of Time was planned as a one-off, a chance to get David Tennant and Tom Baker together in a special story. Then COVID-19 came along and we were able to secure David for more recordings, and so the second and third instalments became a possibility.

“The recording of each one was so different… The second, The Gates of Hell, was great fun in studio as David and Peter Davison know each other so well. And I remember David being so very happy to be working with Colin Baker on the third, telling Colin what an honour it was…

Out of Time 3: Wink was actually one of the most stressful recording days I’ve ever produced. We had some catastrophic remote recording equipment failures and so we didn’t even start recording until 2:30 in the afternoon. This one went in the can almost “as live”, but we had such an experienced team of actors that it really didn’t matter – they were all ‘first take wonders’ anyway!”

Matt Fitton says:

“This was an absolute dream come true: uniting the Doctor from my childhood with an iconic new series Doctor – probably the two greatest peaks of popularity among the general public that the show has seen. “When I heard the end result, I couldn’t help smiling all the way through. It’s a love letter to so many things. I wanted these two Doctors to impress one another – for the Tenth to remember his magnificent past and the Fourth to be reassured about his future – and pay homage to some old enemies and friends along the way.”

David Llewellyn says:

“They are surprisingly difficult. It’s too easy to slip into dialogue that’s too chatty, especially if everyone else is speaking that way, but they’re Cybermen. And if anything, they’re less expressive than the Daleks!

“There was some discussion about which era of Cybermen I was writing for because the voices, and even what passes for a personality, changes over the years. It was my first go at writing for them so it took a couple of drafts to get it right.”

Lisa McMullin says:

“This was written and recorded in about a fortnight during lockdown. I absolutely adore the way Colin and David bounce off each other – the total dream team. And the way the music and sound design conveys the threat of the Weeping Angels (who should be near impossible to do justice to on audio) blows me away!”

I have been longing for Out of Time to be released as a complete boxset, and Big Finish has finally done it. Despite already purchasing the CDs, I was determined to pre-order the download-only collection, out of sheer love for the trilogy. Aside from the bonus interviews and The Gates of Hell music suite, the only new additions to this release are the individual covers which have been updated to include the 2022 logo. You can still obtain the original releases with the covers that use the 2018 variant, as long as you buy them individually (sadly no longer available on CD).

In the meantime, you can check out the official trailers for all three stories, plus the brilliant Out of Time 1 fan animation by Josh Snares. And speaking of fan productions, there’s also the unofficial Out of Plot charity show by Jack Reeves and Harry Hudson, which is due to perform at The Literary Institute in Egham on 22nd November 2025.

Out of Time – The Complete Series is available now from Big Finish.
