Who Could Be the Next Doctor Who? Matt Smith and Jo Martin Make the Bookies’ Favourite Lists

Despite Ncuti Gatwa’s incarnation of the Doctor regenerating into a character played by Billie Piper in the most recent episode of Doctor Who, the bookies are taking bets on who might be the next Doctor — and two previous Doctors have decent odds!

Billie Piper is obviously the favourite, coming in at 8/13, but because she wasn’t credited in The Reality War as the Doctor, we don’t really know whether she really will be or whether this is some sort of trick.

Curiously enough, Whoopi Goldberg has odds of 7/4, after simply mentioning that she wanted to be the Doctor at one point but that she didn’t think it would happen, seeing as she’s American.

But just behind her, at 2/1, is Matt Smith, who played the Eleventh Doctor regularly between 2010 and 2013, then cameoed in Peter Capaldi’s first episode, Deep Breath, the following year. Matt’s name is likely in the hat again because he’s recently said that he misses the days he, Karen Gillan, and Arthur Darvill were travelling in the TARDIS together (he’s otherwise said how well he got on with Jenna Coleman, so Clara fans, do not panic); and of course, David Tennant, previously the Tenth Doctor, returned to play the Fourteenth Doctor in 2023.

Clearly, the Doctor likes revisiting faces sometimes.

As such, Jo Martin is listed as 3/1, having played the so-called ‘Fugitive Doctor’ after debuting in Fugitive of the Judoon, starring opposite Jodie Whittaker’s Thirteenth Doctor.

Also apparently in the running are: Hugh Grant, Tom Hiddleston, Lydia West, Aimee Lou Wood, Martin Freeman, and Erin Doherty.

For now, however, the Doctor is played by… no one, I guess? Arguably, it’s Billie Piper, but that was a last-minute decision and no one really knows if she really is the Sixteenth Doctor.
