Russell T Davies has assured fans that he knows exactly how the next episode of Doctor Who will play out, though he won’t start working on it until next year.
After the uncertainty of the show’s future, people were generally unsure whether the next special, due to air Christmas 2026, is actually mapped out. When asked, Davies, the showrunner, said:
“I know exactly what happens in it, don’t worry about that.”
When asked if he’s started writing the script, Davies replied:
“Not at the moment because I’m busy on [Doctor Who spin-off, The War Between the Land and the Sea]. I’m also shooting a show in Manchester [Tip Toe]. So next year, my plate clears, and we’ll get to work on that.”
At the end of The Reality War, Billie Piper isn’t even credited with playing the Doctor, despite Ncuti Gatwa regenerating into her — Davies himself implied he didn’t know not too long ago — so it’s a fair question.
Some have speculated that even that is a lie, that RTD has written the script, given it will need to go into production early on in the new year; however, anyone who’s read The Writer’s Tale will know these things are generally left close to the wire, so it’s not unlikely it’ll have been left until closer the time of production.
Still, he’ll likely have had to plan it out as he’ll need to have told the BBC what will happen and get people like Billie Piper on board!
Either way, we shall learn more shortly…
