Candy Jar Books has announced Timeslides II, Monsters and Aliens: The Doctor Who Art of Colin Howard, collecting together work from across more than four decades!
Many fans will know Colin best for painting the covers of some thirty VHS covers, but his highly-detailed work has also graced Doctor Who Magazine, Doctor Who Classic Comics, the BBC Books ranges, calendars, and more. Timeslides II includes full paintings, design sketches, illustrations, private commissions, and more, accompanied by a fascinating commentary by Colin, boasting an unparalleled look behind-the-scenes of a master artist as he opens up his archive.
This edition follows the success of the first volume of Timeslides, as well as related books like Kklak!: The Doctor Who Art of Chris Achilléos and The Invisible Artist by Jeff Cummins.
Colin Howard says:
“Anyone who read the first volume of Timeslides will know that I painted a lot more than solely the VHS covers – and that’s where this book comes in. Timeslides II features other Doctor Who work, like private commissions, book covers, alien concepts, early illustrations, Doctor Who Magazine covers, calendar designs, and lots more.
“I suffer from Multiple Sclerosis (MS), a neurological condition that causes damage to the nerves in your brain and central nervous system. Sadly, that means I’ve effectively had to retire from creating art. But on the plus side, it’s given me time to look back through my portfolios and rediscover paintings and illustrations dating back to the early 1980s; Timeslides II gives me the opportunity to share a lot of never-before-seen pieces with the world.”
I’m lucky enough to edit this sequel. When we were putting together the first volume of Timeslides, it became immediately clear that we’d have too much material for just one book. Shaun Russell, Candy Jar Head of Publishing, was very interested in a sequel, especially after the enthusiastic response for Timeslides I, the hardback of which sold out amazingly quickly!
So dipping into Colin’s archives was incredible. I never knew, for instance, that he’d done concept designs for not only aliens in the 1990s BBC Books ranges, but also for Eighth Doctor companion, Sam Jones! A couple of times, he showed me paintings that I’d always grown up thinking were actually photos, such is the level of detail and attention he puts into everything he does.
Colin’s beautiful work deserves to be seen by as many people as possible, so it’s been a real pleasure and joy to uncover more work – and learn more about each piece from Colin himself.
Timeslides II, Monsters and Aliens: The Doctor Who Art of Colin Howard is available to pre-order now from Candy Jar Books.
