A new Sherlock trailer premiered straight after Strictly Come Dancing last night, showing us footage from at least the first two episodes.
We likely see small scenes from The Six Thatchers, which debuts on BBC1 and PBS Masterpiece on New Year’s Day, and The Lying Detective, starring Toby Jones (who played the Dream Lord in 2010’s Amy’s Choice) as Culverton Smith, which screens on BBC1 a week later. Okay, enough talk. Just watch it already.
The last three words seem to have set the web alight, with everyone speculating about who Sherlock (Benedict Cumberbatch) is saying it to – John? Moriarty? Molly? Redbeard? The Fourth Wall? The Fourth Estate? The Fourth Doctor? Doctor Strange? – but there’s a lot more to whet your appetite than just that. Seriously, folks, there’s a flippin’ house on fire!
(The trailer was followed by the teaser for The Return of Doctor Mysterio, which, while divisive, was good to see on the main BBC channel. Finally.)
Personally, I’m loving the glimpses of Culverton, but then again, I’m a big Toby Jones fan. He does look beautifully sinister and manipulative, so I’m looking forward to that!
By the time The Six Thatchers airs, it’ll be a whole 12 months since The Abominable Bride debuted… which is actually one of the shortest periods of time for Sherlock fans to wait. Nonetheless, it feels ages – but we’re a bit nervous that these three episodes of Series 4 might be the very last, particularly with the ominous title for the last upcoming episode, The Final Problem.
Sherlock: The Six Thatchers screens on BBC1 on 1st January 2017 from 8:30pm.
